(January – Summer, 1998)
This past January, NAKASEC joined immigrant rights organizations across the country on a national campaign to restore food stamp benefits to low income legal immigrants. NAKASEC and affiliates collected 5,000 signed paper plates with messages to lawmakers through intensive education and outreach at supermarkets, churches, community events and campuses. We met and advised key government officials including White House Deputy Assistant to the President Doris Matsui and Secretary of Agriculture Daniel Glickman. This past June 24, NAKASEC staff joined President Clinton at the Agricultural Research Bill Signing Ceremony at the White House that marked a major victory with the restoration of food stamp benefits to the most vulnerable legal immigrants.
