국회의원들에 대한 실망감을 드러낸 아시안 태평양계 미국인들의 평가표에 대한 보도 의뢰서
2014 National Asian American and Pacific Islander Immigration Score Card Uncovers Disappointment in Many House Members
워싱턴 디씨- 아시안 태평양 미국인 노동 연합(APALA), 일본계 미국인 시민 연맹(JACL), 미주한인봉사교육단체협의회(NAKASEC), OCA-아시안 태평양 미국인 지지자들은 Cannon House Building에서 있었던 2014년 전국 아시안 태평양 이민 점수 평가 보도 행사를 통해서 435명의 국회의원의 투표 기록과 이민 안건에 대한 예비점수 평가표를 발표하였다.
벤 몬테로소(Mi Familia Vota 교육 기금), 윤대중(미교협), 그렉 첸다나(아시안 태평양 미국인 노동 연합), 프리실라 오치다(일본계 미국인 시민 연맹), Ginny Gong (OCA-아시안 태평양 미국인 지지자)가 연설자로 포함되었다.
개별적인 국회의원들의 평가 점수가 포함된 서신은 435명의 국회의원들에게 전달 되었으며, 2014 전국 이민 점수 평가표가 7월에 최종적으로 공개되고 점수 평가표가 AAPI 단체들에 의해 전국적으로 확산되기 전까지 시민권 획득을 위한 명확한 방법과 가족들의 결합을 지지하는 이민 개혁을 통과시킴으로써 그들의 점수가 향상 될 수 있음을 알렸다. 국회의원들은 5월 28일 가족들이 함께 해야함을 강조한 AAPI 점수 평가표와 비슷한 내용의 서신을 라틴계 지도자들로 부터 받았다.

AAPI 점수평가표는 가족 재결합 법안에 대한 공동 지지와 최근 스티브 킹의 상업, 정의, 과학 및 관련 기관의 세출 법률의 개정 법안에 대한 투표를 포함하는113회 국회에서 실시된 이민관련 법안에 대한 투표와 공동지지를 기준으로 평가되었다.
AAPI 점수평가표는 “2014 전국 이민 점수 평가표”를 만들기 위한 공동 노력의 일환이며, 이것은 히스패닉 연합, 라틴계 미국인 발전을 위한 노동 의회(LCLAA), 라틴계 미국 시민 연합 연맹(LULAC), Mi Familia Vota 교육 기금, NCLR(La Raza 전국의회) 와 Voto Latino 에 의해 시작되었다.

Sharon M. Wong, OCA’s National President said: “Immigration reform is one of the most pressing issues for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. AAPIs constitute 1.3 million of the over 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States; have the highest percentage of foreign-born individuals; and also overwhelmingly sponsor their families through the use of family visas. It is for these reasons that OCA and other national AAPI organizations have come together to release the 2014 National AAPI Immigration Score Card. Our representatives must understand that our communities are watching the way our officials speak and vote on immigration reform. The message from AAPI communities is clear – give us a permanent and bipartisan immigration fix that is fair, humane, and takes into consideration the needs and experiences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.”
Priscilla Ouchida, Executive Director of JACL, said, “”My grandfather died before he could realize his dream of becoming an United States citizen. Immigration laws barred his family from joining him in this country. Today, there are many just like him who have been waiting for decades for citizenship and family reunification.”
Ben Monterroso, Mi Familia Vota Education Fund’s Executive Director, said: “The day after the Latino leaders issued the preliminary scores, the House voted on another anti-immigrant amendment by Congressman Steve King of Iowa. But this time, there were some switches. Republicans, including Joe Heck of Nevada, Pete King of New York, Devin Nunes of California and Steve Pearce of New Mexico, voted against Steve King, even though they had voted with him and the GOP leadership in the past.
We hope that Congress has gotten the message that our communities do not forget those who turn their backs on us. Congress cannot ignore the immigrant community.”
