YKASEC plans to implement its “Occupational Safety and Health Project” through a 3-prong method of education, assistance, and coalition/advocacy work. 65% of the Korean Americans are 1st generation, and of this percentage, 90% are limited English proficient persons. Due to this lack of English proficiency, many Korean Americans face huge language barriers in the workplace environment, and are unable to access resources to educate themselves on workplace safety and health.

To address these issues, YKASEC plans to run a comprehensive education program, which will target limited English proficient Korean American workers and small business owners.YKASEC will utilize conferences, workshops, trainings, and Korean language publications to mobilize and educate the community on preventing workplace accidents and illnesses.

YKASEC also plans to launch an assistance program, which will provide the Korean American working community a diversified pool of services in which they can access information, consultation, legal advice, and direct assistance regarding workers’ compensation and other critical workplace related issues.
